- Abstract in English : The focus of this paper is primarily on the development of the cultural and ecological components of the corridor. Although other goals were integral aspects of the study, their full development lies beyond the scope of this paper. This paper has five objectives in presenting the cultural and ecological components of the corridor study. (1) to present an appropriate method of landscape understanding and assessment for the corridor land as the basis from which to develop a planning, design, and management study; (2) to summarize the salient cultural and ecological issues that arise from assessment of the corridor, the region, and the corridor’s relationship to the larger entity of the Appalachian Trail; (3) to develop a conceptual framework that directs the approach toward the cultural and ecological aspects of planning, design, and management of the trail corridor land; (4) to specify planning, design, and management objectives; (5) to provide two examples that demonstrate how this approach to the cultural and ecological components of landscape was applied to the development of planning, design, and management recommendations for the Appalachian Trail corridor in the Cumberland Valley of Pennsylvania.
