Management have to deal with the intensive uses of forests and growing conditions. However there also is an increasing demand for unmanaged areas which is based primarily on ecological arguments. This paper presents research that was conducted in connection with the participatory planning process of Helsinki City forests. The main aim of this research was to study whether aesthetic and ecological values can be combined in the management of urban forests. The results of this study suggest that ecological and aesthetic management targets are to some extent competitive within urban forests management. Al though visitors may appreciate the idea of the natural ness of an urban forest, the real signs of a natural state such as deadwood are not preferred. Furthermore, the management of understorey increases the accessibility of the visibility in the areas. The results suggest that more environmental education of citizens is necessary for public acceptance of sound ecological forest management principles.
