- Abstract in English : In the beginning of this century, before the inter-war period, grounds surroundings hospitals were seen as an important part of the healthcare whole. The outdoor activities in these grounds, along with the nursing itself, supplemented the medical treatment. . Gradually the focus has switched to the medical treatment, drugs and technical equipment, and outdoor space was no longer regarded as important. However, the importance of hospital grounds for health and recovery from illness has now been acknowledged and, once again, outdoor space plays a major role. Design ideas in Swedish hospital grounds have come full circle. KEYWORDS: hospitals, hospital gardens, health, planting design, well-being.
