- Abstract in English : German students, when asked to draw a picture of their ideal landscapes usually show a high degree of conformity in their response. They seem to have internalised a prototype a cultural landscape containing certain features like water, hills, some trees a little forest and usually a path. Landscape planning would appear to be an easy task if our only goal was to create such ideal landscape pictures. On one hand, the society wants to use and exploit the landscape, as has been the case for centuries. On the other hand, the society aims to protect the landscape to design and plan it according to societal needs. But what kind of landscape we need? And what changes are taking place today and in the near future. We have to consider human needs and economically induced changes in the landscape. The goal of this article is that landscape represents this multi-functionality, that it provides and preserves the conditions for the great variety of needs for both human and non-human lives. This may include the preservation of a historical landscape image, but it may create a well some radical new landscape features, emerging from the realisation of s sustainable land use in combination with new landscape design ideas
