  • Abstract in English : This paper is on health and well being of older people. Universal design is based on the principle of designing for people of all abilities. Can universal design be followed in designing outdoor spaces with a wide diversity of needs? By creating spaces where flowers and greenery can be enjoyed by the five sense, people who have different types of disabilities and elderly people can enjoy nature with remaining senses without being conscious of the own disabilities. Universal design of outdoor spaces is the act of creating each element to be beautiful and usable by all people. It is concluded that: Japan is changing into an aged society more than any other country has ever experienced. In another 15 years, 25% of the people in Japan will be classified as elderly. It is furthermore estimated that the number of people 75 and older living alone will triple. Disabilities or depression as a result of advanced age is likely to gradually reduce the opportunity for elderly people to get out of the house. If this situation becomes serious, space designed to be enjoyed by elderly will not be used even if they are created with universal design. However, a society with a high percentage of elderly people should not mean that everything is negative. If people can develop warm hearts to welcome elderly people and people with disabilities into society, Japan will be a great country where they will be happy to live. Universal design and programs that link people with nature will play an important role in our society in the future.
