  • Abstract in English : Urban green spaces are crucial elements of all cities. The affect the townscape, provide ecological diversity and form essential structural and functional elements that make cities and urban regions more liveable places for their citizens. It is this key role of improving the quality of urban life that has caused the European commission to acknowledge the vital importance of their ecological functions but also with regard to their relevance of healthy citizens, societal well-being, economic benefits and the central role that they perform in the development and delivery of sustainable ideals. This report presents the main experiences, results and recommendations of the UGRE-project. Rather than prescribing any specific model, the authors describe and guide the reader through the process of how to improve the urban green space situation by using the URGE –Toolbox facilitated by interdisciplinary analysis, the selection and description of Good Practice Examples (60) and by considering recommendations and visions for a “Green City of Tomorrow. This report provides an interdisciplinary catalogue of criteria of the city Level (35) and on the Site level (41). They concern the quantity, quality, use, and planning, development and management of the urban green system and urban green spaces. This manual, with its tools (on Cd-rom), is intended to initiate a process of communication and debate. It makes suggestions and proposals for application and interpretation according to the specific requirements of a city or of an individual site, where urban green planning policies are expected to be robust and responsive to the needs of the environment, economy and the social needs of citizens.
