  • Abstract in English : Conventional planning measures are critiqued as inadequate for distinguishing key aspects of neighbourhood scale urban form. This paper will argue the inadequacy of conventional planning methods to measure, describe, and ultimately incorporate a whole range of critical neighbourhood qualities into planning practice and policy. Te context for examining this issue will be the problem of describing nationhood qualities that could potentially support pedestrianization, currently a rather hot topic in urban planning circles. This article attempts to generate a series of environmental measures that more precisely describe operative qualities of what might be referred to a ‘walking neighbourhoods. The paper begins with a brief discussion of the limitation of existing terms and measures of physical planning and suggests some alternative approaches betters suited to picking up the more experiential dimensions of neighbourhood form. This is followed by a brief literature review of pedestrian life and its relationship to urban form. Finally, the results of a preliminary analysis aimed at identifying potential characteristics of pedestrian supportive environments are reported.
