  • Abstract in English : To conserve and connect landscapes of particular ecological, recreational and aesthetic value, may states and towns have adopted legislation for the designation of scenic routes. This investigation focused on a local scenic roads ordinance to determine if the factors considered in the designation process were appropriate. A cognitive approach to landscape assessment base on public participation was developed for this investigation. The goal of this study was to determine the landscape features, natural and cultural, which enhanced preference for roadside landscapes, and to establish the roads and places in the town which particularly valued by local citizens. The main objectives of this investigation were: to compare preferences for three types of landscapes (natural, cultural, and mixed); to compare the rating of photographs of landscape scenes with scores for similar verbal items; to examine the contribution of various landscape components to visual quality; to produce list of the most appreciated local roads and scenic places; to provide background information to initiate a greenways-scenic routes planning process in the town A part of the conclusion is: this research strongly support the value of public involvement in greenway planning, particularly in rural areas
