  • Contents in English : The development of sense of place is particularly influenced by residential status. Those with more superficial connections to place, such as tourists, do not develop the strong attachment that is often found among insiders raised in the place who then remain for most of their life times. Sense of place differs from place attachment by considering the social and geographical context of place bonds and the sensing of places, such as aesthetics and a feeling of dwelling. Insider status and local ancestry are important toward the development of a more rooted sense of place. Three contexts are used to examine the development of sense of place: the residential status, age stage, and development of the adult pair bond. A part of the conclusion/discussion is: Enduring relationships may not seem to be at issue in modern society, particularly in North America, as our young culture is in a developmental stage itself: we are only beginning to realize that ‘we can’t have it all’ that mobility in relationships comes at the cost of stable connections to people and place. Without connections that are lasting, as in a rooted sense of place, we may find it difficult to integrate memories and feelings in later life for the mosaic of places and love partners we have know, that there is little continuity to our own life stories. Without individual continuity, community and social cohesion are the themselves at risk. “What is common to all human societies is their need for a sense of ‘place’ – a feeling of living in an environment which has boundaries and identity”(Marsh, 1988). This does not appear to be a value judgment on his part, but a description of a basic need common to humanity. A sense of place is considered to be of benefit to individuals and to modern society.
