  • Abstract in English : This study examines the criteria used by the public to identify and value urban woodlands in The UK, making comparisons with professional attitudes and conventional valuations currently in Use. In the UK, the development of urban forestry has, so far, broadly followed nature conservation guidelines, consequently, there is a tendency to define, categorize and create urban woodlands on the basis of their broad natural value. Local users, however, have also other interests than only natural values. Relevant social parameters have been identified: walking distance, woodland structure, species composition, size, and personal valuations. There is a danger of neglecting socially important urban woodlands that need to be retained or created in the locations in which they are required. Urban woodlands do not deteriorate in terms of public value from a lack of nature conservation management, but from deterioration in their ability to support social need and personal imagery.
