- Contents in English : This paper presents a study of woodland management guidelines analysed for their inclusion of visual aspects. Urban woodland is an important part of the fabric of urban areas, often providing large and popular recreation environments. The values and benefits are multiple including recreation, education, economy, climate, welfare issues and urban biodiversity. In an urbanised society urban green areas are important for people as a place for leisure activities and to facilitate contact with nature. Most people experience woodland visually and hence visual aspects are therefore an essential element to consider in formulating management strategies for these areas. The aim of this study was to examine the way visual aspects are taken into urban woodland management across two forestry and social contexts represented by Sweden and the UK. It is found that visual aspects of urban woodland can be reduced to a few major dimensions that are reflected in both visual preferences studies and expert assessments: scale, diversity, naturalness, continuity, stewardship, visual accessibility, and coherence.
