  • Abstract : Serbia is a central-Balkan and Danubian country, rich in natural heritage. Owing to its specific position, tumultuous geological past, and still effective neotectonic activity, this part of the Balkan Paninsula is one of the most important centers of geological diversity of Europe. The complex geological structure and soil cover, the relief with a mosaic of high mountains, river, valleys, gorges, wide hilly terrains, and lowlands, the climate ranging from sub-Mediterranean to harsh continental, numerous subterranean and surface water occurrences, from springs and lakes to wild mountain brooks and slow lowland rivers, all create an exceptional array of natural conditions. The great richness of habitats in Serbia enabled suitable living conditions for numerous plant and animal species of different origin, biology, period of origin, distribution range, and life histories. These species have built rich and often unique communities of rivers, lakes, swaps, peat bogs, marshes, wet meadows, steppes, salty terrains, sands, vast lowlands, rolling hills, secluded gorges, steep cliffs, mountain slopes, and most inhospitable peaks. The large number of plant and animal species, their communities and ecosystems, make Serbia “Europe in miniature” as well as one of the centres of European biological biodiversity. The most beautiful, and, from the scientific aspect, practically the most important ecosystems and landscapes in Serbia are protected as natural assets. So far, 464 natural assets have been legally protected: 5 national parks, 14 nature parks, 17 landscapes of outstanding features, 72 nature reserves, 313 natural monuments and 43 surroundings of immobile cultural assets and significant places. Many of these natural assets are internationally important. One hundred protected natural assets presented within this monograph. Some of them have been chosen not far being representatives of their types or categories, but for their significance in reflecting the overall diversity of the natural heritage of Serbia, as a part of the vast diversity and richness of our Planet’s natural heritage.
