  • Brief Description : Kassel had nearly completely been destroyed during World War II. At the end of the war, the buildings of Kassel were bombed up to 70 per cent. After the great success of the German Federal Garden Exhibitions (BUGA) in Hanover and Hamburg, the "city fathers" of Kassel gained courage to implement the next Federal Garedn Exhibition in 1955 – and that happening only ten years after the end of World War II.
The planning was supposed to develop durable and sustainable values. The responsible landscape architect, Professor Hermann Mattern, even talked about an anticipation in the city development of the following twenty to thirty years.
But with his plans for the reconstructed Karlsaue, he actually created a park which is a famous park for the inhabitants of Kassel. And something has been remaining ever since 1955: The Documenta. It was merely a cultural framework of the BUGA in 1955 but it became the most important art exhibition of contemporary art.
