It Is estimated that over 300.000 ha of land in the UK may be contaminated. Woodland can contribute to remediation of (metal) contaminated land. This paper is aimed at making community foresters, planners and developers aware of: (1)The extent of contaminated land; (2) The viability, implications, and benefits of tree establishment on contaminated land; (3) Current research that will provide a systematic framework for assessing the feasibility, risk and benefits of tree establishment on contaminated land.
