Alte Bibel – a 21st C. Park for Bernburg – Play(grounds)

Learning by Playing
All people play. It is fun to play. But playing is also a means for playful learning without being aware of the learning. Sometimes we play alone: absorbed in skill building or recalling, and comprehending, or simply because we have nobody to play with. Sometimes we play together: learning social skills, and because we like feeling connected and being part of a group.

‘Grounds’ for Playing
For children, play is work. They are playing to grow up physically, intellectually, and emotionally, training body and mind. Adults play to relax and relieve the pressure of life and work or ‘play games’ (of hidden-strategy, and pretence). Older people play to stay young physically, intellectually, and emotionally, training body and mind, and importantly, to fight loneliness of old age.

Different forms and types of play require different play settings and challenges, and at young age increasing and towards old age decreasing difficulty and complexity. Playing includes motion and calm aspects. While emphasis on a specific form and type of play depends on the development stage of the player, playing involves at all age groups following types:
– Movement play (training large/fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, body control)
– Creative play (training imagination and making less and more difficult things)
– Role play (learning about life and people, practicing social skills)
– Dramatic play (learning to express feelings and emotions)
– Mind games (learning logic, reasoning skills, memory recall)

GOALS
– Create spaces, where people can not only to relax physically and psychologically but also learn from and interact with the park.
– Let people experience different forms of play rhythm and feel ever the changing and multiplying life force.
– Use “play” to increase communication and corporation.
– Create an active and stimulating park for all people.
