  • Abstract in English : Roads have always been an important influence on the location and growth of urban societies, but there has been little appreciation of their significance in the structural development of cities and towns. Yet transport arteries have a well=defined place in the history of urban design and d impact on the future urban development, because roads and streets are such essential elements of design. The reflections presented in this article on the challenge facing in the urban designer as the functional demands made upon streets become more complex derive from personal experience of urban planning in Norway. They are subjective and may not apply in other countries.
