Belvedere Gardens

Prince Eugen had the Lower Palace built as a summer residency in the period between 1714 and 1723. The axial geometrical concept was completed through the erection of the Upper Palace between 1720 and 1723 and the terrace garden designed according to Italian and French tradition. The costly establishments were reshaped already in the 19th century in a more simplified way and the embroidery ground was replaced by lawns. Further reshaping followed in 1850/51 (Peter Krafft) after the destruction by French occupation soldiers as well as since 1894( Anton Umlauf) for the successor to the throne Franz Ferdinand.
