- Abstract : : In an urban setting, certain equilibrium is achieved with aspects and consequences that are interconnected. In a state of dynamic tension, everything has the potential to impact everything else, and at any given time one subject cab be examined from an alternative point of view with different conclusion being reached. This fact stands as both a challenge and an inspiration that leads scholars to approach the same problem over end over again: to find a more appropriate or precise understanding of the city. Ther fore this book presents a familiar theme re-observed in the scope of another. This book is about spatial relationship between public and private domains considered in the scope of the complex phenomenon of urbanity. Going beyond an analysis of urban limits, the author focuses on the ‘space in-between’ where the superimposition between public and private domains occurs. In part, the effort has resulted in a wide overview of spatial forms of the transition zone between the building and the street-interface, which can be seen as a small=scale core of urbanity. In a wider scope, it may bring new elements to discussion about urban practice today or inspiration to those cope with both the urbanity and the public space. The content of the book is structured in five parts. The first part, titled Urbanity Impossible, presents the contemporary condition and production system of city structure. Special attention is given to the living conditions and production of contemporary suburban developments. The second part titled Urbanity Now, focuses on the phenomenon of urbanity, its concepts and problems with defining it, its conditioning agents and places where the phenomenon can be nurtured. The third part of the book regards relationships between the city block and public space. In this part, under the title Urbanity Interface, the book is dealing with internal structures of the two domains, private, examined within the block and house, and public which manifests itself throughout the public realm, especially street. In the forth part, under the title Interface Morphology, various transition configurations are considered in order to establish proper criteria for classification of the basic types of interface. By analysing about forty characteristic examples, seven types of interfaces have been defined in the last, fifth part titled Interface Typology. The basic classification considerers the difference between the building frontage and territorial boundary at any analysed interface form, but in addition, at every single example is psychological and visual characteristics have been analysed as well.
