  • Brief Description : This space, standing on a cliff above the Douro River, was designed to house a center for exhibitions and events. The design of the building was at the charge of Thomas Dillens and garden was projected by Emilio David. It was inaugurated in 1865, the same day he opened the International Exhibition. This was the venue of several agricultural, horticultural, industrial and commercial exhibitions, art exhibitions, concerts, parties and dances. The original building was replaced by Rosa Mota pavilion and beside was built the Municipal Library Almeida Garrett. It has as main zones: the Garden Emilio David, with several specimens of rhododendrons, camellias, araucarias, ginkgos and beechs, as well as fountains and allegorical statues of the four seasons; the Lime Tree Avenue, with strategic viewpoints; the thematic gardens, such as the Garden of Aromatic Plants, the Garden of the Medicinal Plants, the Garden of the Twin Cities and the Garden of Feelings; the Grove, the Avenue of Chestnut-of-India and the Rose Garden.
