This project is a part of master’s thesis ’’Accessible Landscape Design for Disabled People – School for pupils with visual impairments ’Veljko Ramadanovic’ in Belgrade’’, created in Faculty of Forestry, Department of Landscape Architecture and Horticulture in Belgrade.
The overall purpose of this study is to promote ’’Universal Design’’ in open space projects focusing on planning, building and maintaining an accessible environment.
PROJECT OF SCHOOL YARD
The goal of this project is to design accessible school yard for visual impaired children. In the proces of developing the design concept of school yard, more than 100 children who are blind or visually impaired were interviewed and asked what kind of schoolyard they wanted and needed. Most of them replied they did not want special facilities, but rather a place where they could experience flowers, sunlight, where they can play and learn, just like everybody else. During planning, interviews were conducted to find out the needs of people with visual impairments.
School yard design
The school yard was designed with two principles in mind. First, to design for senses (sense of sight, smell, touch and hearing). Second, to follow universal design principles.
The school yard is divided into five different zones:
1. Zone: Playground, which is divided into two section – Active play and Creative play
2. Zone: Workshop, for training practical procedures
3. Zone: Exploration, which is divided into four section: Sound garden, Fragrance garden, Touch garden and Nature garden.
4. Zone: Sport and Recreation
5. Zone: Resting place
Each zone is designed to facilitate mobility and orientation. In the same time, school yard is organized to be pleasant environment for education, comunication, fun and play.
