ECOLOGY, MONITORING AND TECHNOLOGICAL PROCEDURE FOR CONTROL OF INVASIVE PLANTS IN BIOTOPES OF BELGRADE

Curitba Declaration On Cities and Biodiversity presents base for research of invasive plant species in cities, as a prime center of its introduction and distribution. The largest number of invasive plant species takes in category of ornamental plants. According to researches in USA, where there is long year lasting monitoring (approximately 150years) 85% of invasive plant species are ornamental. EEA (European Agency for Environmental Protection) thinks that invasion plant species are one of the biggest threats for biodiversity (disappearing of homogenoceuses- homogenous ecosystems with several dominant species) and insists on forming the national lists of invasive plant species, as a base of successful communication between countries, for the purpose of adequate monitoring and optimal technological procedure for control of expanding invasive plant species.

In many of East European countries there are only partial researches on invasive plant species and classification is very often based on subjective factors. It is pretty much common in Serbia, where the plant species in urban area aren?t researched a lot. The base for planned research shown in the Project is GREEN REGULATIVE OF BELGRADE (ZELENA REGULATIVA BEOGRADA) and in its scope it is done mapping and evaluation of biotopes. (GIS map of Belgrade?s biotopes).

According to criteria of potential estimation of biotopes and evaluation and realistic value, the project will include separation of specific biotopes; also the floristic and ecological researches will be done. Criteria that will be used for evaluating of biotopes are: basic value of biotopes, characteristic of nature space, age and ability of regeneration of biotopes, biodiversity, unique (endemism, relict), importance of the space with endanger species, level of biotope?s load, dimension, isolation and fragmentation of biotopes.

There will be also criteria for evaluating potential value of biotopes. The mechanisms that explain successfulness of invasive species plants will be emphasized- the mechanisms of species (superior competition, facilitation, reproduction?), but also the mechanisms of ecosystems (unused resources, incomplete niches, unstable ecosystems?)

What is more, researches of levels in reproductive phases and diaspora of seeds (abundant of crops, and variability of seeds) dispersion regulation and germination of seeds of invasive plant species in urban biotopes and breaking the borders in fragmental urban area will be included as well. Research on mechanism of dormanced seeds is important control factor of extension and spreading. Testing vitality and seed?s germination, effect on ecological factors of germination will be base for prediction of specific regenerative mechanisms at endangered habitation, and all this will show mechanisms of control on further expanding of invasive plant species. Capability and way of vegetative reproduction of invasive plant species will be also cover by research.

The main objectives of the project are: contribution in formatting national list of invasive plant species, including Serbia in Paneuropean system for its monitoring and controlling, improving environmental protection of urban biodiversity in Belgrade, establishing monitoring of invasive plant species in biotopes of Belgrade and proposal of specific optimal extents for its control.
