The topic of the winter term 2009/10 was a temporary garden for the 6th Festival Internacional de Jardins in Ponte de Lima (Portugal) with the slogan “Chaos in the Garden”.
From the student’s design description: “‘Chaos’ has a different meaning for everyone. Generally, chaos is seen negatively and is associated with disorder, disorganization and unpredictability. In our concept however, we also associate the term with freedom, energy, inspiration, spontaneity, change, dynamic, variety and lust for life. With our concept ‘fl ag fl ash’ we present the positive qualities of chaos. We show that a mix of order and disorder in life is necessary and we invite the visitors to experience individually the flowing change from expected order to total chaos.Flags are our medium to show a fl owing transition describable in three phases: The entrance area presents quietness, uniformity and predictability with equal coloured and low flags representing the absence of chaos. There follows a dynamic section with a higher frequencyof flags. The different coloured fl ags start to mix with each other and gain height. Due to their translucency they create coloured shadows. These characteristics intensify to a central point with a high frequency of slightly inclined, mixed coloured, high fl ags, resulting in increased impressions and limited view, whereby the feeling for the ambiance gets unpredictable. As individual experiences of visitors are very important to realize the idea of the project, we provide traditional garden chairs in the different sections for sitting in and feeling the surrounding area.
