Alike cemeteries in other cities, also the Main Cemetery in Kassel is confronted with a decrease of burials, resulting from a decrease in the mortality rate and the increasing offer by alternative burial institutions such as ‘Friedwald GmbH’. Thus, there is a great amount of vacant areas inside cemeteries.
In the project, the current situation of the Main Cemetery was analysed and various concepts were designed how to deal with the vacant spaces.
A development concept into a ‘Fried-Park’ as well as extensive planting concepts for vacant areas were among the results.
