Ithuba Skills College

The Ithuba Skills College is a project founded by SArch – Social Sustainable Architecture; a project aimed at European students of
Architecture faculties to design and build facilities for socially disadvantaged areas in South Africa together with the local residents.
The Ithuba Skills College is situated close to the township Magagula Heights, near Johannesburg, South Africa. In spring 2008 students from ILA/BOKU as well as from TU Graz built the first class unit and the outdoor spaces for this school project. The landscape design included spaces for outdoor lectures as well as for play and dance during breaks and events. The design is stongly related to the architectural layout of the class room building, which forms an entrance situation for the rest of the schoolyard. Through the virtual extension of the building’s edges, the open space is structured into four zones. Those zones are connected to the individual utilizations of the building units.
