The project has as its starting point the perfectly balanced geometric structure of the classical French garden. The compositional scheme is tailored after the shape of the site and seeks to offer special visual effects from any point of the setup. The overall view has a strong architectural character, an effect similar to that used by Le Notre. Over this classic compositional structure functions which correspond to the present day needs overlap.
The result of combining the two major design components – structure and function- is a very interesting one – an update for the past, a reinterpretation.
The garden develops symmetrically on both sides of the main shaft access to the castle and also introduces a direct suggestion to the classic French garden – the trident walkways which converge towards the castle. Because of the shape of the domain, the main compositional axes of the garden is perpendicular to the castle’s main access lane – quite atypical situation.
At the intersection and along the major paths, water mirrors and small channels are located. The landscape design also includes structures which suggest the French garden terraces – for example a very modern element – a pavilion which takes its volumetric structure from the horizontal shapes generated by the plan’s composition. The pavilion is mostly covered by vegetation except the main façade which is completely made of glass.
In terms of functionality the garden addresses to both domestic living and the possibility of organizing events – meetings, concerts, cultural events, workshops, etc
Thus, in the north and northwest areas the setup appear less monumental, more intimate, with functions such as vegetable garden, small orchard, greenhouse, rosarium and Birds sanctuary, while in the south and southeast area the functions appear have a more public character- open area for camping and outdoor workshops, amphitheatre area for events and exhibitions, parking. Another interesting function is the pavilion in the western part of the garden which can host exhibitions, conferences, and may be an alternative for spending time during the cold season.
Regarding vegetation, it varies from species with architectural character – Carpinus betulus to rustic species – Rosa canina; The vegetation is also adapted for each area of the garden, depending on its destination. Strong geometric plantations in the central part of the arrangement become more natural towards the periphery of the domain in order to blend with the surroundings. Vast geometric lawns specific for the French classical garden have as decoration only a simple lavender band which doubles the sides.
Also pergolas for climbing roses are located in the rosarium area, herbs, medicines, vegetables and fruit trees.
The overall image of this garden, in which the past overlaps with the present, has both a monumental character, an imperative for a “châteaux de la Loire “ and an intimate one specific for a home.
