Kirschblütenpark

The office YEWO LANDSCAPES was planning a park for the public open space in the Donaustadt from 2013 to 2014. At the beginning of 2015 the Kirschblütenpark opened. In addition to an expanded range of green spaces and open spaces in Kagran, the park provides part of the future footpath network.

This district has been a partner of Arakawa, a district of Tokyo, since 1996, and therefore the park should show the connection to Japan. The park is named by the planted cherry blossom trees which are typical for Japanese gardens.

  • Context : 'Kirschblütenpark' is located in the north of Vienna, in Kagran. This district represents a traffic hub where the U1 station Kagran, the Danube center (a large shopping center) and connections to various motorways are located. Kagran is part of the 22. district of  Vienna, named 'Donaustadt'.

The park is located in the center of new buildings and apartments from the years 1998 - 2000. In the south of the open area lies an ice rink, the 'Albert-Schultz-Eishalle', and a primary and music school. The new buildings are enclosed by following streets: Tokiostraße, Prandaugasse, Attemsgasse and Donaufelder Straße.

  • Brief Description :
The park is a linaer green space in the center of new residential buildings. The park is formed and surrounded by around seven floors high residential buildings. Accesses to the park are located on the streets 'Prandaugasse', 'Ogugasse' and 'Attemsgasse'.

The south part of the park is more detailed designed as the rest of the area. You can find a children's playground and a skating rink surrounded by benches. In contrast to the rest of the park, the play area is covered by old trees.

Softly moving pathes above the ground level serve as network of inspiring ways through the park. Like on dikes it is possible to promenade along different spaces, to relax on the long benches or to be fascinated by the flowering cherries (YEWO LANDSCAPES, 2015).
The pathways remind of a cherry branch. The path is higher than the meadows, in which young trees are planted. The selection of around 100 trees is a connection to Japanese gardens. In the center of the park stands a garden pavilion with pink furniture and a climbing frame for children. On the edge of the park is an artificially heaped up wall.
