The Commission is required to take decisions which involve a critical consideration of the landscape. Three main areas of work are involved in this way:
i. the selection of special areas and the determintion of their boundaries e.g. Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONBs); Inheritance Tax cases.
ii. investment decisions e.g. grant aid for land acquisitions;
iii. impact analyses e.g. major development control cases
This booklet sets out current criteria and methods.
After a brief background to the subject (section 2) the document then sets out the criteria for judging landscapes (section 3) and basic principles to be followed in any exercise (section 4). In other words it attempts to answer the questions 'what is it all about?' and 'why' and 'how' do we value landscapes.
