- Abstract : A public park in Piešťany town called Sad A. Kmeťa (originally a spa park) was arisen in Piešťany - a famous Slovak spa town. The park was established by the family of Erdödy at the end of 18th century – beginning of 19th century. In the 1963 the public park in Piešťany was designated a national cultural monument. In general, this park can be classified as a one of the oldest and best preserved park types in Slovakia. It has been visited by town inhabitants as well as spa residents for the whole period of its existence. The original layout and planting concept have been changed and layered over during the park historical development. The book comes out from a research project that was created on demand for identification of main cultural values of this natural monument and determination of basic principles of monument preservation. The goal of this work was to create an integrated document, which respects cultural, historical and vegetative qualities of the park and defines perspectives and conditions of its sustainable development as a cultural and historical monument in a new historic situation with its threats for the park. The book presents the park history and its development and is specified for defining of main conceptual principles of the further park development as urban cultural landscape in relationship to other town functions. It defines regulatives, principles and conditions of monument protection that are particularized to the urban, architectural, functional and technical principles, as well as dendrological and compositional principles. Its results can propose guidelines to the next park restoration process and formulate the basic principles for any other intervention to the park area. The methodology is based also on the valid planning legislative with aim to support the often weakly affecting monument protecting system. On 132 pages the book includes 15 author schemata; 73 photographs; 40 copies of historical documents and photographs.
