- Abstract : Cities are growing and cover more and more space, reducing open and free spaces and landscapes. New, innovative approaches for revitalisation and restoration get a higher importance, especially to take away the pressure of still open areas and help to keep them their original function. Ecological restoration with state of the art methods, based on latest findings is a key factor for an efficient and sustainable use of our limited resources. Brownfield regeneration is a long process, offering the possibility to create near-natural areas and thus urban biodiversity, with a high similarity to natural habitats, but also secondary biotopes, functioning as stepping stones and making innovative uses possible. To reach those goals, considering the needs of ecological restoration from the start of this process is a must.
