  • Abstract in English : The urban woodlands on people’s doorsteps are where societal values of woodland are highest but also where urban pressure are at their maximum. Urban areas expanding and increasing in number throughout Europe and many other parts of the world. Rapid expansion over the last few decades has brought about changes in the quality of the urban environment, which has led to concerns with the quality of air, acoustic quality, traffic congestion and the general quality of urban life. Open space, green areas and, in particular, urban woodland can assist in mitigating these effects, but they are under continuous threat due to more competitive uses of limited land resources. Recognising the high value of these forests on urban dwellers doorsteps, researches across Europe are collaborating on a project called Neighbourwoods, which aims to enhance the planning and design of urban woodlands. The main objective of this study is to develop tools that are applicable to the diversity of European urban woodland contexts and inclusive of all stakeholders, so that the contribution such woodlands can make to the quality to urban life and the urban environment is improved.
