- Abstract in English : Results of studies showed that still only some 15 percent of all school in Rhineland Palatinatate (Germany) had attractively designed and stimulating playgrounds and that things were little better in other states. Schools seem to reject “design” as something unnecessary and lacking in function purpose, thereby neglecting opportunities to create a satisfying whole as a result of their treatment of playgrounds. Redesign is seen as a matter for the school alone, with little thought being given to the role that the playground can assume outside the times when it is used during school breaks. This is particularly important in the light of open space shortages and the visually prominent position of many school sites. School playgrounds are also ignored in many urban and landscape plans. What form should future schemes take? One of the suggestions is that the role of the children in modelling their environment must be stressed more than previously
