  • Abstract : This work surveys the new realities of urban peripheries and their associated landscape, being a pleading for reconsideration of the general mentality of these forgotten territories, and also of the urban landscape sense and meaning. This is a new approach on urban periphery, by highlighting their landscape, seen as a resource for revival. On the basis of this approach is an evolutionary understanding of the urbanization phenomenon, taking into account the need for sustainable development, on the one hand, and the possibility to capitalize a higher cultural and aesthetic landscape quality, on the other. Beyond the theoretical level, this thesis creates a methodological and practical frame for complex revival landscape operations in such areas. The book is divided into 4 parts and seven chapters. The first part, preceded by an introduction, is dedicated to defining the conceptual framework of the subject. The approach pass from epistemological re-definitions of terms and concepts, through the morpho-genetic analysis of the urban periphery, seen as a specific phenomenon, in which the decisive role is host by the Limit, studied gradually, from the structural metamorphoses, thought its motion patterns, to the effects induced to the landscape. Part II of the thesis deals with landscape urban periphery, defining its specificity in comparison to other types of urban landscape, revealing its potential as a premise for upgrading and construction of otherness in relation to the city itself. Part III of the paper studies the detailed relationship between periphery and urban landscape, through the urban growth impact on the landscape, aiming to find possibilities to asses and minimize the risk landscape, by taking into account the global landscape qualities, and by finding the specific tools of revaluing and revival. Part IV is a conclusion and also a clarification of the theoretical principles and methodological sketch above. The proposed case study implements a methodological model for large cities peripheries landscape revitalizing, by an integrated and rich approach of the urban landscape plan, ranging from sensitive reading of space itself to operational and project management plan.
