Prototype Ecologies; Vegetation in British Landscape Urbanism

A conference paper for World in Denmark 2012 ‘City PLANTastic'(27th to 29th June). The aim of the paper is to begin a discussion of the
potential of the roles that vegetation has to play in landscape urbanism in
Britain, and to propose some principles by which it could operate. Initial
comparisons are drawn between relevant British and American conditions.
Cultural oppositions of urban and natural are interrogated and there is a
consideration of uses of vegetation in addressing issues within the remit of
the landscape architect/urbanist. Questions of ecology, experimentation and
aesthetics are examined and a way forward for designers is proposed. Please see web link for full paper.
