- Abstract in English : Viewing natural scenes contributes to reducing stress, promotes more positive moods and feelings and may facilitate recovery from illness. According to theory, for components of environments account for their restorativeness: being away, extent, fascination, and compatibility. The purpose of this research was to develop rating scale measure of this for components postulated by the Kaplans (1989). Motivations are: (1) by empirically showing that the hypothesized restorative components are separate constructs, an evaluation of this theory is achieved. (2) It is necessary to be able to measure the restorative components to find out how they are related to different outcome measures. The main finding of this research is that the factor analyses of the adjective scales yield a five-factor structure consistent with Kaplan’s theory. Taken together, the present studies indicate that the developed rating scales provide meaningful and reliable measures of the restorative components of nature and city environments posited by the theory of the Kaplan’s. Being away, extent, fascination, and compatibility are experienced by naïve observers as separate constructs. Furthermore, environments with nature scored higher than city environments on all measures.
