Roadmap to Mathare

This project aims to construct an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable multi-purpose community centre in Mathare 3A, Nairobi, Kenya, while using the structure and design itself to demonstrate and introduce appropriate and more affordable green building materials and technologies.

In addition, the project will demonstrate the use of new technologies for e-participation (contrary to what most might think, depending on the relative affluence of certain areas within Mathare, between 32% and 51% of residents own an internet-enabled phone).
Finally, we are also planning to include a maternal health facility within the premises of the new structure since maternal health has been identified as one of the most pressing health needs in the community. And if this works, we are planning to tell other communities about our centre so that this idea can spread to other public spaces in Mathare and Nairobi as a whole.

  • Notes : In Mathare, Kenya’s oldest slum and the place of residence for at least 200,000 people, many of the most basic services are lacking: water, sanitation, electricity, health care, education. But also, there are very few places for the majority of youths, kids, the elderly, the disabled and women’s groups to get together, discuss, learn and reimagine their neighbourhood with others who may have the same dreams and ideas as themselves -- to come up with new, creative ways of tackling the issues that matter.
Over a series of days ín January 2015, we looked at what other communities had achieved. Everybody had a chance to voice their views, vote and think of ways it could all fit together. Finally, we presented our ideas and agreed on a way forward.
