Semiotics of places for the cities of tomorrow

Objectives of Project: This research project wants to combine semiotic and psychological concepts to develop an outline for the new strategies for design of places. To resolve this problem a complex trans-disciplinary study is needed, contain summaries from different expert fields and applying each one of them. The project is meant to be composed of two major parts.

Project Timetable: 2002 – 2004

Structure/Organisation of Project: lST YEAR OF RESEARCH PROJECT:
Theoretical part: analytical review and synthesis of the scientific material dealing with the place, perception of the place and design of the place;

2^ND YEAR OF RESEARCH PROJECT:
Practical part: opinion poll about the new urban places in Barcelona, including corresponding statistics. The theoretical part of the research project is focused on the semiotic levels of the places, i.e. question, what man perceives in a place as a sign, as a space with its own meaning. This semiotic point of view could help us to develop new design strategies for the cities of tomorrow. The research project will discuss the question how a place should be articulated from the semantic point of view, so that it is recognised as preferential. Both questions will be considered from more aspects, therefore the project it consists of two parts and considers at least 2 years of full time researches.
