The importance of the physical environment for play can be characterized as follows. Growing up involves children gradually extending their radius of activity as a result of their desire to conquer and experience their environment. The attraction of surprise and the unexpected in association with the opportunity for safe retreat into a familiar environment is and important characteristic of play. Children need to have a part in the environment of adults and not be restricted to playing away from the everyday environment. These require the linking of indoor and outdoor space and the safe interlinking of open spaces in the residential environment
