The effect of designation on landscape character on Szentendre Island

One of Europe?s largest,
coastal filtered drink water resources can be found on Szentendre
Island in Hungary. The water extracted here
is almost drinking quality. In order to maintain water quality, four types of
aquifer protection areas have been designated, which cover the entire island.
The remainder of the island belongs to ?Hydro geological B? protection area,
where farming is allowed provided it is in compliance with environmental
protection standards. In addition to sub surface drinking water reservoirs, Szentendre Island also has significant natural
value. The island is an important resting place on the route of migratory
birds, also, the coastal forests and the sandy grasslands of the inner areas
have significant natural value. These areas are continuously decreasing due to
building development and farming. Today, besides aquifer protection, every
level of environmental protection can be found on the island, such as, National
Park, Natura 2000, nature reserves of state or local significance, and National
Ecological Network etc. The aim of research in this case, is not the role of
land use in influencing landscape character, but to reveal the modifying
influence of different use restrictions on landscape character.
