The main focus is on the loss of landscape due to urban sprawl in the U.S.American context. It is contemporary with McHarg's 'Design with Nature' and should also be seen in the context of Nan Fairbrother's 'New Lives, New Landscapes'. Whyte was a very influential person, and served as the Co-Chair of President Johnson's Task for on Natural Beauty. The introduction to the reprint by Tony Hiss puts it in its historic context.
