The results of these processes will undoubtedly have affected the way the human communities developed their settlements and landscapes, but it would be a great mistake to suppose that such purely practical considerations were the only, or even te most important to influence those developments. The study of landscape history has shown that human relationships, patterns of trade and commerce, religion, warfare and politics have had a far greater effect on the making of the British landscape than landforms alone.
