- Abstract : This book takes on the concept as the street as a unit of urban development as experienced by its users. It has three main themes: Part I Architectural and spatial frameworks; Part II The interests of users, and Part III Issues of access and design. The first part looks at the conflicts between traditional roles of the urban centre, its architecture and social life and the traffic in the street. The second part looks at young people and adolescents 'on the street', street crime and the siting of public conveniences. The last part discusses transport pressures on old cities such as Cambridge, short-range people movers for transport between adjacent communities, and using public transport instead of private cars to give pedestrians priority
