  • Abstract in English : The European Landscape Convention (ELC) covers all European landscapes, including urban types. The third meeting of the workshops for the implementation of the ELC, held in Cork, Ireland, in June 2005, focused on “Landscapes for urban, suburban and peri-urban areas”. Recommendations regarding the treatment of such landscapes were prepared. Accordingly, policies for regional and urban planning should always incorporate landscape: They should thus include aesthetic, ecological and social concerns, they should be consultative in an all inclusive sense, and they should make reference to best practice examples. To support further implementation of these recommendations, a study is being conducted on policies for peri-urban and sub-urban landscapes. It discusses principles, strategies and projects aimed at the protection, management and planning of urban landscapes. Examples are selected that include urban redevelopment and renewal schemes, urban expansion projects, urban open spaces and open space systems, urban water fronts, regional parks or urban park systems, green belts or parts of them, and others. The study will be completed by the end of 2005.
