Urban Low Carbon Development Strategies

The Urban-LEDS project was funded by the European
Commission, and implemented by UN-Habitat and ICLEI, with the objective of enhancing the
transition to low emission urban development in emerging economy countries
by offering selected local governments in Brazil, India, Indonesia and South
Africa a comprehensive methodological framework to integrate low-carbon
strategies into all sectors of urban planning and development.

  • Funding Agency : European Comission
  • Project Partners : UN-Habitat and ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability
  • Project structure : Following a late-2013 call for proposals from the Urban LEDS implementing team, 11 cities have requested assistance in developing Urban LEDS. As of September 2015, 8 model cities have developed or are developing their inventory using the Global Protocol for Greenhouse Gas Emissions Inventories (GPC) process. Urban LEDS cities are the leaders showing that cities can report according to the new GPC standard, proving the inventory a trustworthy resource that supports the Intended National Determined Contributions (INDCs) that can be submitted to UNFCCC by the National Governments.
